When the community owns the change…

(Approximate Read Time: 2 minutes)

…the change spreads, thrives, and endures. Why? Because ownership of the change by those most impacted creates pride in it. It facilitates a deep belief in the value and importance of the change. It creates a fierce loyalty to it that compels people to stand up in support of it.

Ownership-based change doesn’t have to be noisy. It doesn’t always need large, loud crowds in rallies and demonstrations. It does need, though, people who are willing to engage one-on-one and to quietly go about their work of having the kinds of conversations that change hearts and minds.

You may be familiar with the calculation to this question: If you are saving pennies and you have one to begin with, then double it every day for 30 days, how many pennies will you have at the end of the month? The answer is a remarkable $5,368,709.12. That is the amazing power of compound growth. Of course, the challenge is finding a way to double your money every day, right?

Personal engagement is one of the most powerful ways to create ownership-based change. We’d love it, of course, if the growth were as rapid as that of doubling pennies every day. It isn’t because compounding growth among people is very different from compounding growth in pennies.

People need to hear change messages repeatedly, be given the opportunity and space to think about them, ask their questions and have them answered, and then think some more. It all takes time. However, the compounding effect still works…just more slowly.

All movements for change begin with only one person…or, at best, a small handful of people. As that one or that core of people begin to share out their vision of change, their numbers grow and the change comes closer.

The most enduring changes are made when people own the change vision with the founders, not just “buy in” to it. That’s why ownership-based change matters and that’s why it is central to the Tenacious Change Approach.
