The Normalcy of Disruption

This past weekend I saw the movie, Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller about a community that was quite “normal” according to a few folks who lived in it. Now, there has been a lot of buzz about this movie though most of it has been about the director, cast, and the “behind the scenes” action in the making of the movie. I enjoyed the movie because I like psychological thrillers and this one kept me engaged throughout.

The movie illustrates an important fact about community change: Disruption is normal. What do I mean by this? I mean that despite our best efforts to achieve and maintain a normal in our lives, whether as individuals, organizations, or communities, there will always be disruptions. Sometimes they are big but mostly they are small. Still, they have the ability to knock us out of our “normal zone,” right?

Sometimes we feel like we’ve failed if we have not avoided disruption altogether. What really matters is how we respond to the disruption…not how long we can avoid it.

The Tenacious Change Approach teaches mindsets and principles that help communities remain resilient when disruption occurs.

Remember, change is a disruption.

Even good change is a disruption and how a community responds will determine whether it changes forward or “snaps back” to an earlier time in an effort to recover the sameness of its routine.

And that brings us back to “Don’t Worry Darling” and the community and leaders of Victory which were confronted with change. The movie also illustrates how the repetition and routine of “normal” can mask reality. That’s not a spoiler but another blog.
